The FIFA World Cup 2018 came to a vibrant end on Sunday with France defeating Croatia 4-2 in Moscow. The match was a thrilling experience for the live audience as well as those watching it on screen. Mbappe’s final goal and the dramatic entry of the members of the punk protest group Pussy Riots into the fields added up to the thrill and excitement of the spectators.
The presentation ceremony was not spared of drama either. It started raining during the final presentation ceremony. While other members on the podium including Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and the French President Emmanuel Macron stood there and got drenched in the post-world cup shower, the Russian President Vladimir Putin was the only one who was offered an umbrella.
The others were also offered an umbrella but after a while. This momentary discretion on the part of the Russian authorities took social media by a storm. Netizens on all platforms trolled the Russian President in multiple ways. Twitter handles across the globe shared photos of Putin under the umbrella while the rest were getting drenched.
Putin’s umbrella hogged all the limelight as it got viral on Twitter. However, another photograph of all the Presidents under the shade of umbrellas was made available but did not receive the same amount of interest. Questions and jokes were raised about the current world politics in social media posts.
All the drama ended with the presentation of awards and France taking home the World Cup after two decades.
