On the 4th of August, Thursday, the Russian Court convicted star basketball player, Ms. Brittney Griner, in a 2022 drug case.
Judge Anna Sotnikova announced nine-year imprisonment to the American player and said the time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count towards the sentence. Notably, in February 2022, Ms. Brittney Griner was arrested at Moscow airport after police said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. Although Ms. Brittney Griner’s lawyer tried establishing the fact that the canisters with cannabis oil were concerning her injury, prescribed by her doctor, the court gave her imprisonment and found Ms. Brittney Griner guilty of drug consumption and smuggling.
Furthermore, the Russian Court judge handed down her sentence and fined the basketball star one million roubles (£13,435.)
After the announced verdict, Ms. Britten Griner said, “I want to apologize to my teammates, my club, my fans, and the city of (Yekaterinburg) for my mistake that I made and the embarrassment that I brought on them.” She further added, “I made an honest mistake and I hope that, in your ruling, it doesn’t end my life here.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Joe Biden, the President of the United States of America said, “Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney.” He furthermore added, “It’s unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates.”
In addition, the Basketball League issued a joint statement and said, “The WNBA and NBA’s commitment to her safe return has not wavered, and we hope that we are near the end of this process of finally bringing BG home to the United States.”
