Virat Kohli Resigns From T20 Captaincy, Rohit Sharma Likely To Be His Successor, BCCI To Take Decision

After the Indian Cricket Team Captain Mr. Virat Kohli resigned as the Captain of the T20 format. Rohit Sharma, the Vice Captain of the Indian Cricket Team is likely to succeed him.

On the 16th of September, Mr. Virat Kohli took to his Twitter handle and announced his decision of stepping down as the T20Is captain. The announcement came as a shock to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the fans of Virat Kohli. He is going to leave the T20 format captaincy after the 2021 T20 Indian Cricket Championship (ICC) World Cup, in November.

Virat Kohli also suggested to the BCCI, to remove Rohit Sharma as the ODI Vice Captain and give the leadership to K.L. Rahul and Rishab Pant. However, the BCCI is not convinced and expected to make Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul as T20 Captain and Rishab Pant and Jasprit Bumrah as Vice Captains. A source close to the development and the BCCI, who wished to be anonymous said, “This didn’t go down well with the Board which believes that Kohli doesn’t want an actual successor.”

Virat Kohli’s proposal to the Selection Committee of removing Rohit Sharma as VC made headlines, stating, there is a rift between the two strong players of the Indian Cricket Team.

The decision of Mr. Virat Kohli has disappointed the BCCI, which is now thinking of removing him as the captain of the One Day International (ODI) format too.

Mr. Madan Lal, the former Indian Cricketer said, “I don’t think there will be any discussion about someone else’s name because I think Rohit Sharma will become T20I captain. His performances in IPL as Mumbai Indians captain has been very good. (The) BCCI secretary Jay Shah has spoken about the roadmap. In that case, Rohit Sharma was the vice-captain, he has a lot of experience having been Kohli’s deputy.”

Meanwhile, With this decision of leaving the T20 format captaincy, the 2021 T20 World Cup would be Virat Kohli’s last assignment as the skipper of the team in the shortest format.

The ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled in Oman, the United Emirates of Arab (UAE,) from the 17th of October to the 14th of November.
