The Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO,) on the 24th of January, launched the world’s lightest satellite named, Kalamsat.

Students of a private organization, Space Kidz India, in Chennai, designed and made the satellite, which weights 1.26 kg. ISRO launched the satellite Kalamsat, named after the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India and a renowned aerospace scientist, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC,) Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

K.Sivan, the Chairman of ISRO, said, “The main purpose of student satellites is to enable students to conduct experiments in space. We see that students get involved in the whole process of building the associated systems, including the satellite bust and power system, instead of concentrating on the main science. We wanted to tell them that they can just bring their payload and we will plug in. All the paraphernalia is available with us. Students should just focus on the science, experiment, research and innovation.”

The launch will mark the 46th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV,) PSLV- C44, and the first mission of the PSLV DL, a variant of PSLV.

A group of 20 students, under the supervision of Srimathy Kesan, a 45 year old professional at the Space Kidz India, made the Satellite, worth Rs. 12 lakhs. However, the ISRO launched the satellite free of cost.

Microsat R, a 740 kg satellite is the passenger of the Kalamsat PSLV, which will be used to take pictures of the Earth and will be used for research purpose.

K. Sivan said, “In this mission, the fourth stage… will be moved to higher circular orbit so as to establish an orbital platform for carrying out experiments.”

The launch of Kalamsat took place around 11:37 P.M., on the 24th of January.
