On Thursday, Jio made a sudden announcement that the telecom operator will be killing the ‘Summer Surprise’ offer. This was initially announced on March 31 by the company to maintain the user base.

The company said that this move was advised by TRAI. Advised as in the Telecom Regulation Authorities of India said that the Summer Surprise offer which was effective for three months of free service was irregular and needs to shut down.

The notice that was issued by Jio said, “Jio is in the process of fully complying with the regulator’s advice, and will be withdrawing the 3 months complimentary benefits of JIO SUMMER SURPRISE as soon as operationally feasible, over the next few days.” The wordplay by Jio makes the user unsure if the offer will be ending with immediate effect, or will be prolonged for a few days.

The next part of the statement said, “However, all customers who have subscribed to JIO SUMMER SURPRISE offer prior to its discontinuation will remain eligible for the offer.” Reading between the lines, the statement has not yet ended and the advice by TRAI is helping Jio in retaining its customer base.

The offer is estimated to end on Monday, April 10, which is 5 days since the supposed end date. This is hardly a loss to Jio as the offer will be made available to the Jio Prime Subscribers. The Jio Prime Subscription date, which was previously March 31 was extended to April 15 after failing to reach the required target base.
