In an attempt to prevent impersonation, the tech giant Microsoft has launched a new Skype Lite application. This allows the user to verify the caller’s identity online. This according to the company is ‘Made for India.’

The Aadhar project launched by the BJP government is considered as the world’s largest national identification number project. This allows users to communicate with governments and businesses. It is believed to have a lower potential for fraud and high trust levels.

In a statement, Jasmeen Nagpal of Microsoft said, “With the latest version of Skype Lite, Aadhaar integration can be used to verify users’ identity online, helping them communicate more securely with others.” This is specifically designed to aid important business clients and government representatives.

This facility will prevent impersonation and either party can request Aadhaar verification over the video call using Skype Lite. To verify, one needs to click ‘Verify Aadhar Identity,’ enter the 12 digit Aadhar number and authenticate with a one time password sent via SMS to mobile. After validating, one can share pre selected Aadhaar information with the opposite person to confirm identity.

The statement said, “You will still get the same great Skype Lite experience during the call and once you’ve finished speaking, both parties will see the Aadhaar verification captured as an event within the conversation.” It also added, “Skype will not store any Aadhaar information and as always, your personal information, including your video and audio conversations are securely encrypted.”
