On the 28th of April, Telangana Health Minister Mr. Etela Rajender, addressed the media and briefed them about the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 test process in the State.

Etela Rajender spoke after the Telangana Government was criticised for not conducting enough tests for the Novel Coronavirus infection.

Dismissing the criticism, Mr. Rajender said, “It is not about the number of tests, but the number of cases that tested positive.  Additionally, Telangana has a higher accuracy rate of testing samples.  Over 7,16, 733 tests have been conducted across the country and 29,434 people have tested positive, that is 4.1 % of the total tested samples.”

Speaking about the decreasing cases, Mr. Rajender said, “As per the data released by the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research,) the curve of COVID-19 cases are increasing in other parts of the country while in Telangana the curve was going down.  There are allegations against the State Government that the Government is loose and lenient in containing Coronavirus and not conducting tests, and not disclosing the information.  We have elicited many times that the stats of (the) test are dynamic.  Today (the 28th of April) I have announced that there are 1,009 cases, and as we have nine testing centres — if there are any positive cases, the count will increase.”

Speaking about the rapid test kits, Etela Rajender said, the State Government also gets proposals from companies to supply Antibody rapid blood test kits for COVID-19, but Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, refuses the proposal questioning the credibility of those kits.

The Health Minister of Telangana said, the Government does not want to take any quick decision and would take a call after considering local kits for tests.  He further added, “We will follow the guidelines of the Central Government and its agencies such as ICMR without missing anything.”

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) did not allow private hospitals to conduct the Novel Coronavirus tests, as it would cost Rs. 5,500.

Mr. Rajender said, “If we permit private hospitals to conduct the Coronavirus tests, lakhs of people will go with mild cold and fever. As a single test costs `5,500 we have decided to not give it to private hospitals.”

Meanwhile, on the 28th of April, Telangana reported 6 new cases of the virus, which takes the total tally to 1,009.   In the past few days, Telangana witnessed a decline in the COVID-19 cases and 21 districts are said to be COVID-19 free soon, as the districts did not report a single case in the past 48 hours.
