The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) recently held a meeting and decided to take action against fraudulent property owners in the GHMC limits.

According to sources, the GHMC authorities said those who submitted/ uploaded invalid documents like notaries to generate Property Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs) and made their notary property, a registered one, would now need to face legal consequences.

Speaking of the development in this regard, a GHMC official said, “Action will also be taken against people who enter fraudulent entries in the Property Tax Self Assessment application.”

According to sources, till date, 300 PTINs have been blocked.  In addition, the GHMC Commissioner instructed the Deputy Commissioners to file FIRs against people who submit/ upload invalid documents.

The decision came after the rising cases of fraud and scams related to properties in the GHMC limits.  Many property owners submitted fake documents and generated PTINs, a few showed commercial buildings as residential complexes to reduce tax amounts.  To fix all these issues, the GHMC has invited tenders for the supply, implementation, and maintenance of the ‘Property Tax Intelligence System.’

Under this new process, the GHMC would select an agency, which would submit a report to the corporation regarding the loopholes in the existing property tax system/module.  Based on their report, corrections and changes would be made in the entire system including the ‘Property Tax Self Assessment’ application.

The GHMC said, “Through this Property Tax Intelligence System, wrong entries including plinth area, and unit rate will be corrected and the issues that have been denting its revenue for years will be rectified.  This system will be implemented after the State government’s approval.”
