N.V.S. Reddy, the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL,) allowed women to carry pepper spray in Metro trains for their safety.
On the 4th of December, Mr. Reddy announced women could carry pepper spray with them. The announcement came after a few daily women commuters raised a question about carrying pepper spray as is allowed by the Bengaluru Metro authorities.
After the recent Disha rape and murder case, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government took several key decisions to ensure women’s safety in the State.
Previously, pepper spray was not allowed in Metro trains, but now women can use the spray for safety purposes only.
The HMRL authorities also decided to organise a strict vigil at all the Metro stations in Hyderabad, Telangana.
The TRS Government also passed orders and directed all the police stations in the State to act upon any missing report pertaining to women and children without any delay and negligence.
The decision was announced after a meeting between K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and the State Cabinet ministers.
Government officials, TRS ministers and other officials were present during the meeting.
