A Hyderabad man was duped of Rs. 40 lakhs through a cyber fraud and registered a case with the Hyderabad’s Cyber Police.
According to sources, the man was on a matrimony site, when he became friends with a woman for marriage. The woman told that she was settled in Europe and would soon be visiting Hyderabad, and then they could get married.
The woman, through WhatsApp and Facebook sent a few pictures and made video calls to the victim on a few instances. According to the police, the woman told him she was in need of money a few months ago and took Rs. 42 lakh on different instances for herself and for investment in some business. The man believed her and transferred money to number of bank accounts. However, after a few days of the incident, the woman stopped talking to the victim who suspected it to be fraud and registered a first information report (FIR) with the police. The police registered a case and launched an investigation.
This is not the first case of cyber fraud in Hyderabad. Recently in last month, a teacher was duped of over 30 lakhs. Notably, in 2020 and 2021, Hyderabad reported a rise in the cyber crime cases.
To control the number of cases, the Hyderabad Police have launched helpline numbers and created awareness over cyber fraudster, urging people to be careful.
