In Hyderabad, a customer requested not to send any Muslim delivery boy for food deliveries.
The unusual request has triggered outrage amongst netizens on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The netizens slammed the customer for making a bizarre request, showing bigotry.
The screenshot of the bigotry request shared in Swiggy’s instructions to the restaurant section was shared by Shaik Salauddin, the head of an organisation of workers employed in the gig economy. In his tweet, Mr. Shaik Salauddin said, “Dear @Swiggy please take a stand against such a bigoted request. We (Delivery workers) are here to deliver food to one and all, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh @Swiggy @TGPWU Mazhab Nahi Sikhata Aapas Mein Bair Rakhna.”
Meanwhile, besides netizens, Mr. Karti Chidambaram, the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Indian National Congress (INC) also expressed his point in this matter. Mr. Karti Chidambaram said, “Platform companies cannot sit back and watch as gig workers face such blatant bigotry in the name of religion. What action will such companies take to safeguard the rights of gig workers?”
Notably, this is not the first time that such bigotry behaviour was faced by Hyderabad delivery boys of Swiggy, a food delivery app. In the past also, a similar incident was reported, where a customer in the instruction section wrote, “Very less spicy. And, please select Hindu delivery person. All ratings will be based on this.’
Swiggy hasn’t responded to the controversy yet.
