In 2020, the City of Hyderabad witnessed a shockibg 75 % rise in cybercrimes. 

On the 21st of December, the Hyderabad Police said, during the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, the City saw a reduction in crime rates, but an increase in cybercrimes.

In 2019, Hyderabad recorded 1,400 cybercrime cases, which increased to 2,456 this year.

Shikha Goel, the Additional Commissioner of Hyderabad Police of Crimes and Special Investigation Team (SIT,) said, “Many people are working from home or staying indoors because of the pandemic situation.”

ACP Shikha Goel along with Hyderabad Commissioner of Police (CP) Anjani Kumar addressed the media and updated about crimes in Hyderabad in 2020.

Speaking about the reasons behind the rise of cybercrimes, ACP Shikha Goel and CP Anjani Kumar said due to a switching to the online world, people are using online transactions and prefer being on social media, which paved the way for more cybercrimes than conventional crimes.

Ms. Goel said criminals are also switching to online mode and conducting various crimes including, fraud, phishing and cyberbullying.

However, the overall crime rate in Hyderabad, Telangana reduced by 10 % in 2020.
