The Hyderabad Police, on the 5th of January, booked Mushtaq Malik, the organizer of the Million March, for violating the Police’s permission.
Carried out on the 4th of January, the Million March was organised to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which gives citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
According to the Act, the Hindu, Parsi, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh and Christian refugees from the aforementioned countries residing in India since or before the 31st of December, 2014, would be eligible for Indian citizenship.
The Hyderabad Police booked Malik under sections 143, 149, 290 and 341 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.) Besides, the City Police also booked Mushtaq Malik under the Hyderabad Police City Act.
According to the registered complaint, the Police permitted a protest of 1000 people on the 4th of January at Dharna Chowk. However, more than a thousand people gathered and conducted several rallies, exceeding the number of protestors allowed at a time.
The Hyderabad Police is yet to issue the notice seeking an explanation from Mushtaq Malik.
