T. Vijaya Kumar, the Commissioner of the Telangana School Education Department, on the 3rd of December, announced self defence training would now be mandatory for girls across the State.

The officials of the Education Department sanctioned an amount of Rs. 1.38 crores for self defence classes which would be held for a duration 3 months in approximately 1,544 government schools in Telangana.

Ms. Kumar ordered the District Education Officers (DEOs) to issue a notice to all the government schools regarding the same.  The principals of all the schools are asked to conduct training for any form of martial arts such as kung fu, karate and judo.  The schools were also asked to hire a trained professional for the 3 month training in coordination with the District Sports Development Authority.

Speaking about the eligibility of the trainer, he/she must be qualified with proper certification from the National Institute of Sports in Martial Arts or have a University Certificate in Judo and a year’s experience in training individuals in martial arts at government institutions.  The hired trainer would be given a monthly salary of Rs. 3,000.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government released an amount of Rs. 1.38 crores, out of which Rs. 2.79 lakhs would be given to 31 upper primary government schools and Rs. 1,36,17,000 to 1,513 secondary schools.

The classes, which would begin in December and continue till February, would be held twice a week for a duration of 1 hour.
