Over the last fortnight, 43 swine flu cases were reported in Telangana.  The majority of cases were reported in Hyderabad.

With the rise in swine flu patients over the fortnight, the experts predicted the number of cases are likely to increase further in the coming days.  The Health Department of Telangana alerted all the private and government hospitals about the same and asked them to be ready.

A senior official of the Telangana Health Department said, “While all district and area hospitals have been alerted on the possibility of swine flu cases increasing, currently cases are mostly being reported from a private hospital in and around the City. We have been expecting a surge in cases mostly in the month of January. As of now, out of 100 samples, less than 7 % have turned out to be positive H1N1 virus.”

Though the number of swine flu cases usually start to rise in early November, following which hospitals get alerted, this year, it started in late December and early January.

Swine flu is an infection spread due to the H1N1 virus, one of the most common Swine Influenza Viruses (SIV) in India.  The H1N1 virus which spreads when an individual comes in contact with an H1NI infected person or breathes the air containing the virus.  When someone with H1NI coughs or sneezes, the virus spreads in the air.
