The Telangana Government, on the 18th of May, announced the production of cotton during kharif season with an aim of making farming profitable for farmers in the State.

K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana announced the production under the new Agriculture Policy to promote Telangana’s agricultural products on the world market.

In view of the huge demand for the cotton produced in Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) asked the farmers to grow cotton in 70 lakh acres of land.

In the last season, cotton was cultivated in 53 lakh acres. In regard to the cotton production in the State, the TRS Government would provide all marketing facilities to sell quality cotton at world level so that farmers would get more profit.

While 70 lakh acres land would be for cotton cultivation, 40 lakh acres land would be given for paddy cultivation in the State.  In addition, sugar free Telangana Sona variety rice would be grown within 10 lakh acres land this time, as the variety of rice has a huge demand in the international markets.

Apart from crops, vegetables would be grown in 2 lakh acres land and turmeric farmers in Nizamabad, Jagtial would grow chillies in 2 lakh acres in a few identified areas.

However, farmers who would go against the instructions of the State Government would not get any facility including benefits of the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Recently, on the 13th of May, the TRS Government adopted a new pattern of agriculture under the new agriculture policy in the State.  Under the new agriculture policy, the State Government would decide what to grow and farmers need to follow the same.

The new cropping pattern would come into effect from this monsoon season and is expected to bring a big transformation to the sector.
