Telangana Government To Conduct India's First Smartphone Based EVoting Dry Run In Khammam

Telangana is all set to conduct a dry run for India’s first smart phone based e voting solution on the 20th of October.

In September, the Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) announced that they have developed India’s first smartphone based eVoting solution. The need to develop such an eVoting solution was due to the ongoing Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Due to the Wuhan virus, the nation started working digitally like work from home (WFH) and online classes. To enhance the voting system and make it in a digital format, the Telangana SEC developed this unique eVoting platform.

The State is scheduled to conduct a dry trial of the eVoting solution on the 20th of October. The State Government released an official notification regarding the same. The release read, “The solution has been developed and tested. Its dry run in the form of a dummy election will be conducted in Khammam district with the registration on the application open from October 8 to 18, and dummy voting will be held on October 20. Though the initial scope was limited to a subset of citizens, the dry run is open for all citizens of the district.”

The Telangana SEC developed this eVoting solution with the help of Emerging Technologies Wing of the Telangana Information Technology (IT) Department of and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC.)

An expert committee comprising of Professor Rajat Moona, the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai and Technical Advisor to Election Commission of India, and professors from IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi guided the IT department in developing the eVoting platform.

The TSEC eVoting solution would have three artificial intelligence authentication steps, following which a user would be allowed to vote. The three steps would include Aadhar Card verification, live detection of individual and database of an individual. The digital voting would also reduce the chances of tampering with votes and would be unbiased and authentic.

With this, Telangana would be the first State to develop and conduct eVoting facilities in India.
