Telangana HC Reviews Advocate Couple Murder Case, Orders State Government And Police To Fast Track Investigation 

On the 17th of February, a shocking murder was reported in Telangana’s Peddapalli district.

In the broad daylight, a few unidentified people murdered an advocate couple.

Identified as Advocate Gattu Vamana Rao and his wife Gattu Nagamani, the couple were stabbed to death. They were coming back from a local court in Manthani and on their way to Hyderabad, when the incident took place. 

According to sources, near Kalwacheral in Ramagiri mandal, a few unidentified people stabbed both the husband and wife.

Soon, a video of the incident went viral all over social media platforms.

In the video Vamana Rao (53) was lying in a pool of blood on the road while vehicles were seen passing by and his wife Nagamani (50) was lying badly injured in the car.

Eye witnesses of the incident called the police and they were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they died during treatment.

According to a few witnesses, Kunta Srinivas, a local leader of theTelangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is said to be involved in the murder case. However, proof against him is yet to be presented.

Meanwhile, launching an investigation in the case, the Telangana Police took the driver of the advocate couple into custody and started an interrogation.

In addition, the police also sealed several routes to stop assailants from escaping.

Ramagundam Police Commissioner V. Satyanarayana who is supervising the case said six teams were formed to catch the culprits. He said, “We will catch the culprits, no matter how powerful they are.”

The sudden murder of the advocate couple is said to be due to an old enemity and could also be related to their recent petition case filed against a politician.

Recently, the couple filed a disproportionate assets case against Zilla Parishad Chairman Putta Madhukar.

Besides, the disproportionate asset case they also filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the alleged lockup death of a Dalit man in Manthani police station.

The advocate couple also sought protection from police alleging threatening calls. The Telangana High Court in February 2021, heard the request and asked the State Police to ensure protection to the couple and make sure they are not harassed.

When asked about the suspects, Vaman Rao’s brother Indrasekhar Rao named Kunta Srinivas, who was allegedly involved in land encroachments to be involved in the murder case.

Soon, the matter became a political issue, leading to the criticism and justice demands from opposition.

The Indian National Congress (INC) leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Manthani, D. Sridhar Babu demanded a judicial probe and inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI.) 

In addition, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana unit, asked for a high level probe into the killing of the couple.

On the other hand, on the 18th of February, the Telangana High Court took a suo moto cognizance of the incident and directed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government and the Telangana Police to take steps ensuring a proper probe in a time bound manner.

The court also directed the State Government to file a status report and ensure to collect relevant evidence and present the evidence before it along with the video clippings of the crime which have gone viral on social media.

In addition, advocates of the Nampally Criminal Court boycotted their duties in Hyderabad and demanded justice to the couple who lost lives due to a conspiracy.

The Telangana High Court posted the matter to be heard on the 1st of March.

The investigation in the case is underway.
