The Novel Coronavirus patients with clinically mild symptoms could stay at home isolation.

The Telangana Health authority, on the 28th of April said the patients who are having mild symptoms of COVID-19 need not be admitted to hospitals and could stay home following proper care.

The announcement came after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare allowed home isolation for COVID- 19 positive patients with mild symptoms.

On the 28th of April, the Union Health Ministry issued a notice and said, very mild/presymptomatic patients having the requisite facility at his/her residence for self-isolation will have the option for home isolation.

The decision was taken in the wake of limited availability of hospital beds, ventilators and medical staff proportion to the increasing number of positive cases.  The Union Health Ministry said, at present all the patients are being treated at hospitals.  Out of the total, only 15% needed oxygen and 5 % Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility , the remaining 80 % of COVID-19 patients were diagnosed with mild symptoms like fever and cold.

However, with the issued notice by the Indian Health Ministry, the Telangana Government is thinking to allow patients with mild symptoms to stay at home following isolation guidelines.   Before going to self isolation at homes, the Telangana Medical department would conduct some tests and clinical analysis, following which they would be assigned as a very mild case and would stay at home.

The patient should also have facilities to quarantine themselves from family members and a caretaker to communicate with the hospital and report about the patient’s condition.

After the self quarantine gets over and  with no symptoms of COVID-19 infection, the patient would be free and could discontinue their home isolation.  The District Surveillance Officer would provide a certificate stating the  patient is free from COVID-19 infection.

Eligibility criteria for home quarantine:

  • Those assigned as clinically mild cases by State medical officer
  • One with requisite facilities of  self isolation at homes
  • Spacious houses to quarantine and maintain distance from family contacts
  • A caretaker should be available round the clock 24×7.
  • Caretaker and family contacts must take HCQ as a prophylaxis.
  • Should have Arogya Setu app and their Bluetooth and WiFi should always be switched on.
  • The patient should monitor health regularly and inform the District Surveillance Officer about their health condition.
  • Home quarantine guidelines must be followed by the patients

The patients assigned home quarantine need to shift to the COVID-19 treatment centre if they face difficulty in breathing, persistent pain/pressure in the chest and mental confusion.

Telangana is currently treating as many as 610 active cases of the Novel Coronavirus at State run and designated COVID-19 treatment centre, Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, the total number of positive cases till the 29th of April is 1,009.
