The Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU,) along with the Task Force busted a racket functioning pre natal sex determination and abortion.

On the 29th of May, the Warangal Police, AHTU and Task Force, in a joint operation with the help of Kakatiya University Campus (KUC) Police, arrested 18 persons involved in this gender determination tests and unauthorised abortions.  The arrest was made after a raid, following which the officials seized sex determination scanning machines, Rs. 73,000 cash and 18 cell phones.

Getting into the details, the officials of the district Medical and Health department also participated in the raid, helping to nab the accused and bust the racket.  The arrested were identified as Vemula Praveen, Vemula Sandhyarani, Dr. Balne Pardhu, Dr. Moram Aravinda, Dr. Moram Srinivas Murthy, Dr. Balne Purnima, Balne Pradeep Reddy, Kaita Raju, Talla Arjun, Pranai Babu, Keerthy Mohan, Balne Asalatha, Kongara Renuka, Bhukya Anil, Chengelli Jagan, Gannarapu Srilatha, Bandi Nagaraju and Kasiraju Dileep.

After the huge arrest, Mr. A.V. Ranganath, the Commissioner of Police of Warangal, said, the raid was conducted after receiving several complaints and all the accused involved have been arrested.  He further said that the prime accused Vemula Praveen along with his wife Sandhyarani had been operating a secret scanning centre in Gopalpur area, located in Venkateshwara Colony.

Mr. A.V. Ranganath also mentioned that this is not the first time they have arrested Praveen and his wife, earlier also they were arrested on similar charges.  Praveen had set up a secret network along with RMPs, PROs, hospital managements, medical staff and some doctors to run his illegal activity successfully.  Not only this, the gang was associated with some hospitals like Lotus Hospital at Hanumakonda, Gayathri Hospital, Upender (Pardhu) Hospital at Nekkonda, Balaji Multi-Speciality Hospital at Narsampet for conducting operations.  These hospitals have been performing abortions by charging exorbitant fees and the amount was shared by all the stakeholders.

The investigation revealed that the hospital management involved in the activity were getting a commission of Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 30,000 per abortion.  The gang conducted over 100 abortions.

After the racket bust, the accused have been booked under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT) of 1994, and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)
