Students of St. Francis College for Women, Begumpet, on the 17th of September, staged a protest against the college management for their restrictions regarding students’ dressing.
The management of the College imposed a rule, according to which, girls have to wear kurtis below knee length and anything above the knee is not allowed. The rule was imposed in August. The college students and class representatives tried to connect with the management and urged them to withdraw the restriction. Instead of changing the rule, the management hired two additional female guards to check the length of students’ before letting them enter the premises.
According to sources, the college administration even sent back students who wore kurtis which were above knee length, which affected the students’ attendance. The guards even started asking students wearing burqas to lift the burqa and show the length of their kurtis.
When asked about the reason for this restriction, the college management stated the young women would not not find good marriage proposals if they do not dress properly.
Despite numerous efforts of the students, the management did not listen to them, due to which, the students chose to protest against the management.
Hundreds of students gathered outside the college and demanded the college authorities withdraw the rule.
A group of students, including the alumni, met the Principal of St. Francis College with their demands.
After the meeting, the Principal of the college made an announcement, removing the kurti dress code. The Principal said no new rule would be imposed and the students can follow the old dress code of the college.
Mr. Karunakar Reddy, the Circle Inspector (CI) of Begumpet, along with a few women constables, was at St. Francis College for Women, trying to keep the situation under control.
