Ms. K. Kavitha Kunthala, the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) of Nizamabad, demanded national festival status for Telangana’s Medaram Sammakka Sarakka Jatara.

On the 25th of January, Tuesday, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLC asked Mr. Sanjay Bandi Kumar, the President of the BJP in Telangana to bring the national festival status to Telangana’s Medaram Jatara. The statement of Ms. Kavitha Kuntala, asking BJP President for the declaration, came after Centre failed to provide national festival status to the event. Notably, in the past, the K. Chandrashekar Rao Government demanded Medaram Sammakka Sarakka jatra ro be known as national festival and urged the Central Government to allocate funds. However, their requests went unheard.

Taking to Twitter, the TRS MLC Ms. K. Kavitha said that the Telangana Chief Minister Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao sanctioned Rs. 332.71 crores from 2014 to conduct the Medaram tribal festival, whereas the Government of India did not provide a single penny. She alleged that BJP ignored the requests of the TRS Government to identify Medaram Jatara as a national festival.

The four day Medaram Sammakka Saralamma jatara is a mega religious congregation of adivasis, scheduled to be held at Medaram village in Telangana. The event marks the fight of Sammakka and Saralamma, a duo of mother and daughter, who fought against the unjust law of the ruler Pratapudra of the Kakatiyas. According to the history of Medaram Jatara, Prataparudra imposed taxes on the Koya Tribe and when they were unable to pay the taxes, the Kakatiya ruler called for a war. In the war Sammakka’s husband and the Koya tribal Chief died, following which she along with her daughter entered the battle ground. However, after almost winning the war against the ruler, Sammakka and Saralamma died and the battle ground where they died was known as the land to celebrate the festival.

The event has been declared as a State festival by the Telangana Government and celebrated every two years. To celebrate the event, the State Government releases funds and organises the event on a grand note. For the 2022 Medaram Jatra event, the Telangana Government released Rs. 75 crores.

The famous event Sammakka Saralamma Jatara in Medaram is scheduled to be held from February 16th 2022 to February 19th 2022.
