Dhanush Guns – Indian Army Gets The First Batch

On the 8th of April, the highly awaited Dhanush 155/45 towed gun system finally reached the Indian Army in Jabalpur.

Also called Desi Bofors, the hitting range of these guns is almost 11 km more than the imported guns. After the K-9 Vajra and the M-777 ultra light howitzers, these are the third kind of artillery guns to be inducted into the Indian Army.

“The gun is equipped with inertial navigation based sighting system, autolaying facility, onboard ballistic computation and an advanced day and night direct firing system. The self propulsion unit allows the gun to negotiate and deploy itself in mountainous terrain with ease,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Based on the Bofors drawing, the Dhanush guns have been designed and developed by the Ordnance Factory Board and were given to the Defence Ministry at the Gun Carriage Factory in Jabalpur.

The Indian Army has been waiting to modernize its weapons for nearly three decades. With close to a 110 Desi Bofors ordered for the Army, the Government is doing everything it can to help improve the weapons used by those who protect the Country.

Taking inspiration from the way the Swedish Bofors performed during the Kargil War, the Indian Army put in a request for the brand new guns.

Apart from accommodating a bi modular system (BMCS,) Dhanush guns also come with an upgraded fire standard NATO 155 mm ammunition.

Created as a combined effort between experts at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO,) Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA,) Bharat Electronics Limited and PSUs like the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL,) the Dhanush is expected to be an extremely important addition to the Indian Army.

Stay tuned for more updates.
