India will host the first Military BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit. This is an exercise focussing on counter terrorism in September.
As part of this exercise, the Army Chiefs from the 7 member states will hold a discussion. The exercise is scheduled for the second week of September in Pune.
The Defense Ministry said, “The aim of the exercise is to promote strategic alignment among the member states and to share best practices in the area of counter terrorism.”
The BIMSTEC was set up in 1997 with India, Bhutan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. This year’s theme will include counter terrorism in semi urban terrain and cordon and search programs. Each of the country’s Army Chief with 30 soldiers will attend the exercise.
