Pakistan and Afghanistan share a 2,400 Km long border known as the Durand Line. For as long as Pakistan was formed they have been in continuous conflict with Afghanistan regarding the border. Pakistan and Afghanistan have decided to involve Google Maps to solve this dispute.

Late last week, Pakistan decided to close ‘Bab-e-Dosti’ Afghan-Pakistan border after Afghan forces violated the internal border laws. The deadly attack was against Pakistani consensus staff and the security personnel. The attacked left 12 dead and nearly 40 injured.

Afghanistan refuses to acknowledge the Durand Line and believe that where the river of Indus ends belongs to them.

Senior Pakistani security official explained, “Officials from the geological survey departments of the two countries will conduct a survey, and they will also make use of Google Maps.”

Google is known to stick to the laws of the country and base the map of the country in relation to their national interest. For example, Google Maps of India shows Kashmir part of the country. Whereas, Pakistan’s google map depicts Azad Kashmir as their integral part.

With lengthy negotiations and mutual consultation, Pakistan and Afghanistan plan to solve their conflicts.

Mohammad Tahir, Peshwar Chief Police reported, Two counter-terrorism department personnel were wounded in the IED (improvise explosive device).”

After negotiations, both sides have agreed that a geological survey should be conducted. Technical teams of both countries will use GPS and Google Maps as well as other means to get the answer,” explained Abdul Razeq, Police Chief of Kandahar province, Afghanistan.

This wouldn’t be the first time Google maps has been called to solve marking a border problem.
