NGT Issues Warning To AP Over Safety Measures In Polavaram Construction, Forms Committee

On the 23rd of February, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) criticised the Andhra Pradesh Government, over the Polavaram Project construction.

The Polavaram Project was started under the leadership of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Central Government. The Project is a multipurpose irrigation project which is expected to solve the water crisis in Andhra Pradesh.

Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) is constructing the Polavaram Project which would cost Rs. 4,385 crores.

The NGT warned the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government regarding a possibility of Uttarakhand type incident.

In Uttarakhand due to the safety measures in construction many people lost their lives. According to the NGT, the Andhra Pradesh Government is also following the same path as the Uttarakhand Government and is avoiding safety measures in the Polavaram construction.

As per the report, the NGT expressed dismay that the environmental plans are not up to the mark and asked the Government to follow the safety measures.

It warned the YSRCP Government not to repeat the mishap that took place in Uttarakhand.

In regard to this ,the concerned authority of the NGT is going to form a committee. The committee would be headed by a retired judge.

The details of the NGT committee regarding Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram Irrigation Project are yet to be made.

Stay tuned for further updates.
