Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former Indian National Congress (INC) President, entered Andhra Pradesh, during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra” and supported the demand for Amaravati to be the only capital of Andhra Pradesh.
On the 18th of October, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said, Amaravati should be developed as the only state capital of Andhra Pradesh. The support came after a delegation of leaders of the Amaravati Joint Action Committee (JAC) called on Mr. Rahul Gandhi and explained to him their demands. During the interaction, the JAC raised the problems faced by farmers and other sections of people after the three state capitals’ proposal by the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP.) Notably, in December 2019, Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, proposed to have three capitals of Andhra Pradesh.
The three decided capitals are Kurnool, the Judiciary Capital, Visakhapatnam, the Administrative Capital and Amaravati, the Executive Capital.
Protesting against the same, the JAC sought the support of the Indian National Congress for their demand to develop Amaravati as the only state capital. In response to the JAC’s request, Mr. Rahul Gandhi extended support and assured any kind of legal assistance to the JAC and the protesting farmers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders would continue their Bharat Jodo Yatra in Andhra Pradesh, covering 100 km, till the 21st of October.
