India added 1,69,899 fresh infections of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. The Union Health Ministry on the 12th of April, 8:00 A.M., updated about the COVID-19 situation in India and reported the highest single day spike of 2021.

The cases are rising massively with a daily spike of more than 1 lakh. On the morning of the 11th of April, the Union Ministry reported the highest 1.52 lakh single day spike, which exceeded the next day with close to 1.70 lakh COVID-19 cases.

With this, the Nation recorded more than 1 lakh cases for the 7th consecutive days, setting another grim one day record. In addition, according to the Union Ministry with 1.69 lakh new cases, India reported 903 deaths and 75,288 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

Compared to the first wave, with a maximum 1.5 lakh single day spike, the second wave is said to be more dangerous. The Government of India (GoI) warned people to be cautious and follow all the guidelines of the COVID-19 infection including wearing face masks, social distancing and Sanitization. Many states and Union Territories (UTs) like Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh imposed night curfew and partial lockdown to sustain the spread of the virus.

With this, the Country’s COVID-19 tally reached over 13,525,364 positive cases, of which 1,21,53,621 are recovered/discharged cases, 1,70,209 deceased cases and 12,01,804 active cases. The new cases were based on the tests conducted on the 11th of April. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed 14,12,047 tests taking the cumulative samples tested to 25,66,26,850 till date.

The number of active cases increased by close to 7 lakhs in just the past one week

The active caseload rate of COVID-19 stands at 8.09 %, recovery rate fell to 90.44 % and fatality rate is at 1.50 %.

The updated data regarding the COVID-19 is available on the official website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.)

In addition, Maharashtra, which is the worst COVID-19 hit state in India accounts for 51.23 % of the total active cases with nearly 6 lakh cases. Concerned about the situation, on the 11th of April, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray suggested a strict lockdown.

In addition, the Delhi Government led by Arvind Kejriwal also announced new restrictions, including banning most public gatherings and setting limits for attendance at restaurants, theatres, on public transport and functions like weddings and funerals.

Meanwhile, hospital staff and medical staff of several states are witnessing a shortage of vaccines, beds and other medical facilities to treat patients infected with COVID-19.

The alarming surge in the Novel Coronavirus is not only an issue for the Government but the medical staff handling the patients.

In another major update of COVID-19 in India, in the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination 10,43,65,035 shots have been administered on the 11th of April. The pace of vaccination picked up in April, with an average of over 36.4 lakh doses administered daily this month.
