In a unique vaccination drive, the Maharashtra Government decided to begin doorstep vaccination for bed ridden people.

Mumbai, one of the cities with the highest number of COVID-19 cases, is starting a special drive from the 1st of August. A door to door vaccination drive would provide vaccine doses against the deadly Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus) to senior citizens, who are bed ridden.

Besides elderly people, differently abled and people with severe health issues would also receive vaccination at their doorstep. The decision was taken by Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, after the recent court hearing regarding the same. The Bombay High Court (HC) reviewed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking help for the elderly bed ridden people to get COVID-19 vaccine doses.

After reviewing the report of the Maharashtra Government over the vaccination drive, a division bench of the Chief Justice of Bombay Dipankar Datta and Justice G.S. Kulkarni said, “The Union Government did not rise to the occasion. However, the State government has risen to the occasion and today there is some light at the end of the tunnel.” The Bench further said, “We hope and trust that the State Government and the BMC shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that the eligible bedridden and immobile individuals will also have the benefit of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

It is to be noted, the vaccine doses provided under this new door to door scheme, would be free of cost.

Starting from the 1st of August, 3,505 people, who registered themselves, would receive their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine. However, as of now, the State Government has made a draft policy and would make a finalised policy soon. Anil Sakhare, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the State Medical Department would begin the work soon.

The special drive would begin from the 1st of August. In addition, a final report regarding the vaccination drive would be submitted on the 6th of August in the Bombay HC.
