For some reason, the grass is always greener on the other side. While Caucasians visit beaches to relax, drink mimosas while getting a tan for a ‘browner’ skin, we Indians are in the pursuit to look whiter. It is all because of this vicious viewpoint that we have about ourselves. We perceive the beauty from without rather than from within. Finally someone has called out this evil in our society. That Someone being the Bollywood actor Abhay Deol.
Abhay Deol took to Facebook yesterday to point out how Indian ads are subtly trying to tell us that fairer skin is better than darker skin. Fair N Lovely has become a brand that equates fair with confidence. Garnier is now a product that promotes purity of skin rather than purity of heart. Ponds is whitewashing our face as well as our minds. With situations of racism mounting up even in our Country along with that in others, it is surprising to see how much Indians are after the ‘white’ skin and how much they detest ‘dark’ skin. So much so that in uneducated places, deep in the labyrinth of the hinterland, it is still unwanted to see a dark girl no matter how good hearted she is. The tirade of posts called out biggies like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and many more who have endorsed such products.

Speaking on such campaigns Abhay posted saying –
There's a lot more of these campaigns that are blatantly, and sometimes subtly, selling you the idea that whiter skin is…

Abhay Deol also went on to show the other side of the coin by stating that not all actors have sold out to the fairer skin, namely Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda,Ranbir Kapoor, etc. But this war on whitewashing might be seen as going over the top when there are real problems like poverty and child education to be battled against. The product companies could argue too that they are after all marketing their product and nothing more. But the way it has been done till now needs to be changed. We need to propagate that a healthy skin is what is needed, not fair or dark. And above all what is inside matters much more than what is on the outside.
