Indian Premier League is back with all its glory and glamour. After the auctioning of cricketers ensued, the first match of the season was played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. But not before the audience got some eye candy in the form of Amy Jackson dancing to the latest tunes from Bollywood. But the sight to the sore eyes went sour pretty quickly when the crowd realized that Amy, unfortunately, couldn’t dance!

Although the later part of the night made up for itself with a stunning display of game in which Sunrisers Hyderabad took home the first win, it was still not a grand opening that we have come to except from the tournament. After all the whole concept was introduced for the plain reason of entertainment and when the glamour becomes gaudy, it certainly disappoints. And that is what Amy did last night – disappoint. Disappoint the people watching, disappoint the producers of the show, disappoint the intolerant twitterati. People were already jumping on her ashamed carcass before the first act was over. Tweets in dozens rolled out about how they would rather see Virat Kohli himself shake a leg or that another girl on screen caught everyone’s eye rather than the shiny outfit of Amy Jackson.

But let’s take a pause and actually go through the performance again. Agreed it was abysmal. Amy was trying to catch the beats and give her best although it wasn’t good enough. But that is the point – she was trying to give her best! With the eyes of the world on them and probably not much training in dancing, anybody can falter. One other point to be noted is that the choreography itself was too heavy and not something that would have looked good in a group dance. Obviously there is no taking back that maybe a born dancer like Malaika Arora Khan or Katrina Kaif would have done justice but there are levels to every dancer. Yes we weren’t a deewana of her in ‘Saara Zamana Hasseno ka Deewana’ and it seemed like she had two left feet in ‘Tamma Tamma’ and probably that her steps in ‘Kala Chashma’ made us really want one. But at the end of the day it is all for a feel-good factor and instead of saying that ‘Amy Jackson ruined the night’ let’s say that ‘What was slowly started by Amy Jackson was well ended by the Sunrisers!’
