Golden Globe Awards: Oprah’s Speech And Winners List

The 75th Golden Globe Awards were held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. This award function is the first since the #MeToo campaign began and the celebrities decided to spread awareness. Most of the celebrities were seen wearing black to highlight the ongoing issue of harassment.

Seth Meyers hosted the grand event and remembered to joke about Donald Trump and took a dig at Kevin Spacey. Seth Meyers also joked about the ongoing harassment cases cropping up in Hollywood by starting his monologue with, “Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen.”

The star studded evening saw amazing winners and one of the highlights was Oprah Winfrey receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement. Winfrey took the stage with the award in hand and gave a rousing speech. Oprah explained that “speaking your truth is the most powerful tool you all have.”

Oprah said, “We have all lived too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men and for too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”

Winfrey ended her speech with, “So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns it will because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say me too again.” Her honest words raised the audience to their feet as they applauded her thought provoking speech.

The films that stood out at the award function were Three Billboards and Lady Bird. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stars Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson in a comic drama with a strong female lead.

Lady Bird starring Saoirse Una Ronan and Laura Elizabeth “Laurie” Metcalf revolves around the eccentric story of self named Lady Bird and her relationship with her mother. The film won the two most important awards of the evening, Best Actress and Best Picture for a motion picture comedy or musical.
