The farmers in Nizamabad, who filed nominations to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Nizamabad, on the 4th of April, filed a petition in the Telangana High Court.

The farmers filed a petition seeking an urgent hearing. In the petition, the farmers approached the Telangana High Court to postpone the Nizamabad Lok Sabha elections, as the farmers did not get enough time to promote their symbols and campaign for themselves.

The farmers said, “As we are contesting as Independent candidates, we need time to take our symbol to the masses in our constituency.”

Approximately 245 farmers filed their nominations to contest against Kalvakunthla Kavitha, the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Nizamabad constituency.

Out of 245, the nominations of 180 farmers were accepted, who will now contest against the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) member, Kavitha.

The farmers’ reason behind filing the nominations is their disappointment with the ruling Government of Telangana, the TRS.

The Telangana Government failed in bringing turmeric farming under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and in forming a National Turmeric Board. The MSP would benefit the farmers of the District, as they could then get a good profit from turmeric agriculture.

This is not the first time the farmers are protesting against the Telangana Government. Previously, the farmers held protests and demanded, turmeric be classified as a food crop.

The farmers appealed to the Telangana High Court to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the elections and conduct them as a part of the 2nd phase. The 2nd phase of the Lok Sabha elections will be held on the 18th of April 2019.

The Telangana Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held on the 11th of April for a total of 17 Lok Sabha seats.

The major parties contesting the Telangana Lok Sabha elections are the TRS, the Indian National Congress (INC,) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The results of the Telangana Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.

Stay tuned for further updates about the Telangana Lok Sabha elections.
