A woman was raped and tortured in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, on Saturday night. A relative allegedly raped her and tortured her brutally by inserting an iron rod in her private parts over a land dispute with her family.
The accused, accompanied by a friend, allegedly called the victim out of her house, situated in Niranjan Pat locality to resolve the dispute. Both the relative and his friend took the woman to a nearby pond and committed the crime.
The victim was found by a local rickshaw puller who helped her and took her home. She was taken to a Dhupguri hospital, but due to her critical condition, was shifted to the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital later.
According to the victim, though the relative was accompanied by his friend, the latter did not rape the woman. The victim further said it was the relative who committed the rape. The incident happened when the victim’s husband was not at home.
The incident in West Bengal is similar to the Nirbhaya rape case of 2012 in Delhi. In the Nirbhaya case, a girl was raped in a moving bus and one of the accused inserted an iron rod in her private parts, following which the victim later died.
The police have arrested the accused and are investigating the case.
