Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Acting President of Sri Lanka issued an Extraordinary Gazette and declared a State of Emergency in the island nation.

Issued on the 18th of July, Monday, the emergency was declared after Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former President of Sri Lanka submitted his resignation from the post of President.

The state of emergency was declared in the interest of public security, with effect from Monday, as the country grapples with social unrest amid continuous protests and economic crisis.  As per the gazette notification, the public emergency in Sri Lanka has been declared in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.

The state of emergency has been declared in a proclamation of Article 40(1)(C) of the Constitution, by virtue of the powers vested in him by Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance (Chapter 40), as amended by Act No. 8 of 1959, Law No. 6 of 1978 and Act No. 28 of 1988.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former President of Sri Lanka, who offered his resignation is currently in Singapore.  The president first flew to the Maldives after tens of thousands of protesters stormed his official residence in the capital Colombo and from there he flew to Singapore.

On the other hand, the Presidential elections in Sri Lanka are scheduled to be held on the 20th of July, whereas the nomination would be done on the 19th of July.
