Mr. Chennupati Jagadish, a professor at the Australian National University (ANU) has been appointed as the next President of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS.)
With expertise in Nanotechnology science, Mr. Chennupati Jagadish is the first Indian origin Australian, to hold the AAS President’s position. The World’s leading physicist and professor Mr. Jagadish replaced Mr. John Shine, who has held the position since 2018.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, Professor Chennupati Jagadish shifted to Canada and completed his postdoctoral studies. In 1990, he moved to Australia and took up a position as a professor at the ANU.
During his career which spans 30 years, he published more than 700 international papers, worked at the ANU, led the Semiconductor Optoelectronics and the Nanotechnology Group at the ANU. In addition to this, Professor Chennupati Jagadish supervised 65 PhD students and mentored 50 post doctoral students.
The new position as the President of the AAS would help Mr. Chennupati Jagadish to champion the cause of scientific excellence while leading the organisation in providing scientific advice to the Australian Parliament
Mr. Chennupati Jagadish said, “I started my life in a very small village in India and I benefited from the generosity of many teachers and many other great people.” He further said, “The hope is our endowment will open doors for others to develop links and networks in the hope they will see that the future is bright for them.”
Professor Chennupati Jagadish would be the 20th President of the Australian Academy of Science.
