The U.S. men’s national football team was left disappointed after they lost their chance to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. This will be the first time since 1986, that the American team will be watching the World Cup from home.
The final qualification match was alongside Trinidad and Tobago who won with a 2-1 score.
USMNT head coach Bruce Arena said, “We didn’t qualify for the World Cup.”
After the match with a defeated look Arena said, “That was my job. To get the team qualified for the World Cup … This game in my view was perfectly positioned for the US team and we failed on the day.”
He further said, “We have no excuses. We failed today. We should have walked off this field with at least a point.”
While the American team was faced with defeat, Argentina sang a victory anthem. The football team was initially struggling and there were chances of missing out on the World Cup but Lionel Messi took up the burden. He dragged his team to the World Cup with a hat trick beating Ecuador 3-1.
From Europe, Portugal and France have qualified along with Germany, Serbia, Poland, England, Spain, Iceland and Belgium.
Out of the 32 slots for the World Cup, 23 have been filled for the international tournament. The World Cup will kick off in Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow next summer.
