On Monday, a Delhi Court convicted the underworld don Chhota Rajan and 19 others in the fake passport case. A special judge of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI,) Virender Kumar Goyal found Rajan guilty of possessing a fake passport.

On June 8, 2016, the court charged Rajan and the then passport officers Deepak Natvarlal Shah, Jayashree Dattatray Rahate and Lalitha Lakshmanan under the Indian Penal Code sections of criminal conspiracy, cheating, cheating by impersonation and forgery of documents. The officers were accused of issuing a fake passport to Rajan by the name of Mohan Kumar in 1998 from Benguluru.

The three officers are out on bail, while Rajan is in the custody of the court. There are 85 cases against Rajan, for murder, smuggling, extortion, trafficking and much more. 70 cases have been registered in Mumbai against him for Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

On October 25, 2015, Rajan was arrested by Indonesian Police at the Bilai airport under the Interpol Red Corner notice and was deported to India in November 2015. Rajan is also considered the right hand Dawood Ibrahim, the underworld don responsible for the 1993 blasts in Mumbai. The equation changed after the attacks and Dawood’s henchmen tried to kill Rajan in 2000 at his hotel room, which he escaped.
