The Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for maligning the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) and targeting its founder Mother Teresa.
The accusation comes after a sister from the MoC order from the Ranchi home ‘Nrimal Hriday,’ was arrested along with a staffer for allegedly selling a newborn to a couple from Uttar Pradesh. The child was born to a minor who is an inmate.
The Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das directed the Jharkhand State Child Protection Commission to probe into the case. Following the probe, Jharkhand Police, on Wednesday, rescued another child who was also allegedly sold by the same shelter.
Following a complaint by Rupa Verma, the Chairperson of the Ranchi unit of Child Welfare Committee (CWC,) the police arrested the Nirmal Hriday staffer Anima Indwar and rescued 22 children. The children were shifted to Shishu Niketan following which the Nirmal Hriday Shelter home was sealed.
MoC headquarters in Kolkata issued a statement reassuring that necessary actions would be taken against the guilty. The spokesperson Sunita Kumar also announced the MoC had stopped their child adoption facility three years ago.
Mother Teresa herself set up Missionaries of Charity. And now they are also not being spared. Malicious attempts to malign their name. The Sisters are being targeted. #BJP want to spare no one. Highly condemnable. Let MOC continue to do their work for the poorest of the poor
