On Thursday, the rain not only clogged roads and caused traffic jams but also foiled the plans to set a Guinness world record. The record was the largest number of women forming the shape of a Thangedu flower which is the state flower of Telangana.

Three thousand women dressed in yellow and green sarees formed the shape of a Thangedu and another 3,000 were going to make Bathukammas at LB stadium in Telangana.

The tourism secretary of Telangana, Burra Venkatesam said, “We shall make another attempt in November. We were attempting to set Guinness records in two categories the formation of a Thangedu flower, (and) the preparation of Bathukammas. The attempt under the first category was successfully completed, but representatives from the Guinness Book of Records thought that it was a rehearsal.”

An official adjudicator of the Guinness World Records, Mr. Swapnil reported, “We considered the first event to be a rehearsal, and the rain interrupted the second event.” He also mentioned that the previous record was 2,567 women forming the Thangedu flower.

He further added, “This time we are not considering a record to have been set.”

Tuesday was the Maha Bathukamma celebration that was conducted at Lal Bahadur Stadium. The celebration included at 25 feet tall flower arrangement and 35,000 women from 31 districts came to dance and sing Bathukamma songs at the stadium.

Last year, we managed to secure the record of 9,292 women preparing Bathukammas at LB Stadium.
