Decision on Bringing Facebook, Twitter Servers to India Yet to Finalize

The government of India is yet to finalize on the establishment of servers from websites like Facebook, Twitter among others, to properly resolve issues pertaining to the content that is against the law.

“The government has not decided to get servers of popular social networking sites, like hike, Facebook, Twitter etc established within the country,” Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

The Minister further said that it becomes difficult for security agencies to track encrypted data offered by diverse service providers, and with major social networking services like WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat lets users to share all kinds of media that include audio and video, irrespective of the time in a secured manner.

“At times these services may also use by anti-national and criminal elements, which pose a security threat,” the Minister said.

“There are multifarious aspects involved in security enforcement agencies getting such encrypted communication in readable format such as technical, international relationship, legal and regulatory policy, commercial and security requirements etc,” Miniter Ravi Shankar Prasad added.
