Mr. Svante Pääbo, a Swedish geneticist scientist won the Nobel Prize 2022 in the category of Physiology or Medicine. He has been awarded for his groundbreaking work and discoveries in the field of human evolution.
Highlighting the research and discovery of Mr. Svante Pääbo specialises in the field of evolutionary genetics. His research concerning genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution is said to be a major discovery to reveal, how, gene transfer had occurred from these now extinct hominins to Homo sapiens. Furthermore, it also mentioned the ancient flow of genes to present day humans has physiological relevance today, which affects how our immune system reacts to infections. He is considered as one of the founders of paleogenetics and worked extensively on the Neanderthal genome. Speaking about his findings, Mr. Svante Pääbo sequenced over 3 billion base pairs in collaboration with the 454 Life Sciences Corporation. This project, led by Pääbo, will shed new light on the recent evolutionary history of modern humans.
On the 3rd of October, Monday, Mr. Thomas Perlmann, the secretary of the Nobel Committee, announced the winner at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. With this announcement, the one week Nobel Prize awards announcement in various categories in the educational field, kick started.
Speaking of the schedule, on the 4th of October, the committee would announce awards for physics prize, chemistry on the 5th of October and literature on the 6th of October.
Furthermore, the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize would be announced on the 7th of October and the economics award on the 10th of Oct.
Meanwhile, The prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000) and will be handed out on December 10. The money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.
