It is a known fact that Army wives are as brave as the soldiers to whom they are married. Proving this two Army Wives staying in the army quarters helped in averting a hostage situation. Terrorists disguised as Police Officers entered the army unit located three kilometers from headquarters of 16 corps, with the goal of taking hostages. They made this move in order to take army families and officers as hostages, which was averted by the two wives. The women along with their newborns started attacking them with household items and before long the terrorists could not continue their plan of action and had to turn back.
In a statement released to the PTI, an Army spokesperson said,”The wives of the two army officers, who were on night duty when the encounter broke out, displayed exemplary courage as they blocked the entry of their quarters with all the household items, making it difficult for the terrorists to break into the houses.” The two babies rescued are 18 months and two months old, the officer said.
He also said the women’s bravery was what caused a blockage to the terrorists and averted a huge crisis situation. Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Manish Mehta added,”The terrorists entered two buildings which were occupied by officers, families and men. This led to a hostage like situation. The situation was very quickly contained and thereafter, in a deliberate operation all were successfully rescued, which included 12 soldiers, two women, and two babies.” In the rescue attempt, one officer, and two jawans sacrificed their lives. The bodies of three terrorists have been recovered and combing operations have started in the early hours today morning.” He added, “The terrorists forced their entry into the Officers Mess complex by throwing grenades and firing at the sentries. In the initial counteraction, one officer and three soldiers of the Army were martyred.”
At the break of dawn, today army troops started a combing operation in and around the perimeters of XVI Medium Regiment where a group of terrorists attacked yesterday in Police uniforms and killed seven soldiers including two Majors. The entire area has been quarantined and a combing operation is underway through all the nullahs and hook and nook of the border area and Jammu-Srinagar highway.
