On the 21st of October, the Assam Government decided not to give government jobs to individuals having more than two children.
The Assam Cabinet conducted a meeting on the evening of the 21st of October and took some key decisions to be implemented in the State, including the 2 children rule. The rule would be implemented under the small family norm.
During the Cabinet meeting, the ministers also discussed implementing the New Land Policy. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) released a statement which read, “New Land Policy was adopted. Three bighas of land will be given to landless indigenous people. Landless people will be offered half a bigha to construct their houses. These cannot be sold for 15 years.”
The Assam Government, in 2017, passed the Population and Women Empowerment Policy of Assam. The policy states individuals having only two children would be eligible for government jobs, whereas the existing government officials were asked to follow the norm strictly.
The two children family norm and the rule about no government jobs being provided to individuals with more than 2 children would come into effect from the 1st of January 2021.
