Mr. Balasaheb Thorat, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) submitted his resignation and quit the party, on the 7th of February, Tuesday.
In his resignation letter addressed to Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the INC, Mr. Balasahed Thorat said, he cannot work with Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole due to his “anger” towards him. Besides leaving the membership of the INC, Mr. Balasaheb Thorat also resigned from the post of the Maharashtra Congress legislature party leader. Sources said he is firm on his stand and is unlikely to take back his decision.
Getting into the details, the sources close to Mr. Balasaheb Thorat said, despite being a senior leader, there were statements being made against him and his family, and some people were trying to tarnish the image of Mr. Balasaheb Thorat and his family. The sources also claimed that the INC unit in Maharashtra under the leadership of Mr. Nana Patole indulged into ‘dirty politics’ and humiliated Mr. Balasaheb Thorat, multiple times and was not consulted before decisions were taken in the INC unit of Maharashtra.
Mr. Balasaheb Thorat said, “Recently, during the elections to the Legislative Council, some people came up with such things that we were linked with the BJP, and rumours were also spread that we would be given tickets by the BJP. We have seen how these people spread rumours. But the idea of the Congress is our idea, I believe, and therefore all of you should also remain calm.”
The resignation of Mr. Balasaheb Thorat could be a major drawback for the Indian National Congress in Maharashtra, especially when the State is set to contest the assembly elections next year.
With the current internal disputes and Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray issue in Maharashtra, strengthening the INC in Maharashtra could said to be a challenge for the opposition party against the Bharatiya Janata Party.
