Bhagat Singh was an Indian revolutionary icon during the Indian Independence. Today we remember him on the day he gave his life for this Country. Singh was hung by the Britishers on the 23rd of March 1931. Here are 10 interesting facts about the revolutionary Bhagat Singh:

1. Today is called Shaheed Diwas to commemorate the day three freedom fighters were fatally punished for fighting for a free land. Along with Bhagat Singh, his comrades Sukhdev and Rajguru were also sentenced to death.

2. Bhagat Singh ran away from home when his parent’s tried to get him married. He made a thought provoking statement before his left home, “My life has been dedicated to the noblest cause, that of the freedom of the country. Therefore, there is no rest or worldly desire that can lure me now.”

3. When Singh was just 8 years old he said he wanted to grow guns in the fields. He said it would then be easier to defeat the Britishers. 

4. In 1929, Singh and his comrades attacked the Central Assembly with bombs. However, the explosive was made of low grade to scare and not hurt anyone. The British Forensics Investigation report confirmed the low grade bomb. 

5. One of the main things that pushed Singh to the edge was the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Singh bunked school to visit the place of tragedy and collected red dyed sand from Jallianwala Bagh.

6. Bhagat Singh was a member of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA.) Over time he added Socialist to the party’s name. 

7. Singh drew his inspiration from the ideas of Vladimir Lenin on socialism. He then went on to read Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky this made Singh an atheist abandoning his Sikh religious belief. 

8. Inquilab Zindabad that translates to Long Live the Revolution is a common slogan used at protests. This phrase was coined by none other than Bhagat Singh. 

9. According to people who witnessed Singh’s fatal punishment said he wore a smile on his face as he walked up the stairs to the noose. 

10. During his time in the Lahore prison, he kept a diary where he made daily entries. The diary was filled with the dreams of a free India.
