Sakshi Misra, the daughter of Rajesh Misra, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) moved the Supreme Court (SC) for police protection.

Sakshi, who married Ajitesh Kumar, a Dalit man, on the 11th of July, filed a petition in the SC and asked for police protection for Ajitesh and herself.

Last week, she posted a video on a social media platform, announcing her marriage to the world officially.

In another such video, she said, Ajitesh and she have life threat from her father, brother and an associate, as they were unhappy with this marriage.

However, Rajesh Misra, the MLA of Bithari Chainpur in Bareilly district, denied the allegations and said his “daughter is an adult and has a right to make a decision.” He further said, “I and my family are busy in our work. I am doing the people’s work in my constituency and presently running a BJP membership campaign. There is no threat to anyone from me.”

On the other hand, R.K. Pandey, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG,) said the police found out about the couple’s requirement for security through social media. However, the Police do not know the location of the couple, due to which they cannot give them security.

The hearing for the petition filed in the SC is scheduled to be held on the 15th of July.
