Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) on the 18th of October, recommended Justice S.A. Bobde as his successor.

CJI Gogoi, who is scheduled to retire as the CJI of India on the 17th of November, forwarded a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice and suggested Justice Bobde be appointed as the CJI.

Justice S.A. Bobde is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court and served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court previously.

As per the tradition, the outgoing CJI recommends his successor 30 days before his tenure ends. Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure as the CJI was of 13 months and 15 days and ends on the 17th of November.

Dipak Misra, the former CJI, recommended Ranjan Gogoi as his successor, following which, Gogoi took oath on the 2nd of October as the CJI.

Justice S.A. Bobde, who is likely to become the new CJI, is expected to take the oath of office on the 18th of November and would have a tenure of 18 months.
