Despite the tussle amongst political parties and an ongoing Supreme Court (SC) case pertaining to the Government formation in Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took over as Chief Minister (CM) of the State.

On the 25th of November, Devendra Fadnavis, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) took charge at the Administrative headquarters (Mantralaya.)  He signed his first cheque after becoming the CM of Maharashtra for a second term.

Before taking over, Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar paid tribute to Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan, a former CM of Maharashtra, on his death anniversary at Vidhan Bhavan, Mumbai.

Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and CM Fadnavis took the oath of their respective offices on the 23rd of November.

After it was finalised on the 22nd of November that the NCP, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Shiv Sena would ally to form the Government, Ajit Pawar’s move to form an alliance with the BJP and become the Deputy CM came as a shock to all.

Overnight, on the 23rd of November, the BJP completed all the formalities needed to form the Government and around 8:00 A.M., the BJP was in power in the State.

However, the NCP, the INC and the Shiv Sena filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC,) claiming the Government formation was illegal.  They questioned questioned how the BJP, in just a few hours, removed President’s rule and claimed the stake to form the Government.

Named Aghadi, the alliance of the INC, the NCP and the Shiv Sena alleged Ajit Pawar of misleading the BJP regarding the NCP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) supporting it.

Sharad Pawar, the President of the NCP, said he did not know about Ajit Pawar’s intentions and said no MLA of the NCP supports Ajit Pawar’s alliance with the BJP.

The Supreme Court heard the petition and reserved the verdict for 10:30 A.M., on the 26th of November

A three judge bench, comprising Justice N.V. Ramana, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, heard the petition.

The floor test would be held after the SC’s verdict, reserved for the 26th of November.  The floor test which of the two alliances would come to power in Maharashtra.
