P. Chidambaram, the former Finance Minister of India, is still in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in relation to the INX Media Case.

The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating the 2007 INC Media money laundering case since 2015.  The agencies claimed they had enough evidence against Chidambaram to prove him guilty.

The Supreme Court, after conducting a hearing on the Chidambaram’s petition, adjourned the case to the 5th of September and extended the CBI custody till the 5th of September.

The CBI said while in custody, P. Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram need to be at the CBI quarters and cooperate in the interrogation process.

The decision to extend the arrest came after the CBI and the ED appealed to the SC to deny P. Chidambaram protection from arrest, as P. Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram need to treated with an ‘iron hand.’

A bench of 3, comprising Ranjan Gogoi, the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) R. Banumathi and Justice A.S. Boappanna, heard P. Chidambaram’s petition seeking protection from arrest and bail.

However, the SC said, “We are conscious that we should not usurp the jurisdiction of the concerned trial court.”

On the 23rd of August, the High Court of Delhi extended the CBI custody till the 3rd of September.  On the 3rd of September again, after the SC hearing, the Court extended the CBI custody until the next hearing.

A Delhi Court approved the extension of the CBI arrest of P. Chidambaram and is conducting an interrogation.

The SC postponed the hearing to the 5th of September.

Stay tuned for further updates.
